Tree Planting By Residents At Tasman Beach
*Mr. J. D. Avery, secretary of the Otaki Commercial Association, on We'dnesday night sought the per.mission of the Otaki ' Borough Gouncil to the planting of trees in Moana Street by beach residents, in conjunction with the association. "Residents will supply trees, carfy out the planting, and provide the protection by means of drums," the letter stated. Mr. Avery asked for. the council's permission to procee'd. with the .work, and . also wished to know if the council would take charge after the trees were established. The recommendation of the works committee, that, the association be advised that the planting be not 'done until such time as the storm water drainage in Moana Street Jtiad been attended to, caused Cr. N, D. Anderson to remark that it seemed a pity to stop' the planting when residents were showing keenness. He also remarked that the storm water referred to affected only a small portion of a fairly long street, and that the pohutukawas it was intended to plant would in time to come be a source of great beauty. Cr. G. McKinley supported Cr. Anderson expressing the hope that the council would do its utmost to encoux'age residents to improve and beautify their streets, especially at the beach. Other eouncillors considered that although the storm water drainage could be a big job, the hold-up should only be of a temporary nature, as once the levels were taken planting could be proceeded with. The Mayor, Mr, C. F. Atmore, gave an assurance that the council was anxious to assist, and added that it was not proposed that the present planting season should be missed.
