HOROWHENUA COLTS NEEDED MORE PRACTICE
There is ho doubt that when the Manawatu Colts played Horowhenua at Levin last Saturday, the visitors had the" superior team. The 'match is one which > could easily have b'een won by the local team had they been given the opportunity of more practice. They lacked the co-operation and confidence in each other which was possessed by the Manawatu players. In the lineout Manawatu had the advantage with their faster and more agile forwards, but Horowhenua were usually more successful in the loose. I. Bond showed himself to advantaige at
raking the ball. One of the finest players on the fieid, and one who could adapt himself to any situation, was W. White, the Manawatu first fiveeighths. His consistent play, quickness to grasp any opening and fleetness of foot, together with his uncanny ability to turn and twist and yet still make a great deal of ground, made, him one of the most outstanding members of the team. Top-rankers in the Horowhenua team were H. Sayers and W. Winiata, although they played two entirely different games. Sayers was brilliant, being ready to dart in at every opening with fast and loose penetrating thrusts. Winiata on the other hand distinguished himself by being on the ball all the time. Perhaps one of the best all-round forwards on the field was B. Hughes, who was set down..as an emergency but replaced a player who did not turn up. Anderson proved himself a good • all-round player, with special abilities in the front row. G. Hudson, the Horowhenua captain, gave several demonstrations of his outstanding dash and penetrating power. On the other hand T. Newton, who was shifted from first to second five-eighths during the, game, spoiled several good rushes with his poor pasSing. He failed to show his usual form. On the wing, T. Evans proved disappointing. Horowhenua could well learn a lesson from the manner in which the Manawatu rearguard threw the ball. around. It was this which secured the visitors their second try. „
