Much Sought Bebbington Shield Brought Home After 15 Years
HOROWHENUA'S Senior A representative team made a grand. start last weekend when it retrieved the Bebbington Shield from Bush at Pahiatua. - Presented in 1921 by Mr. J. Bebbington, then a publican in Levin, the shield was first won in 1922 by Rangitikei, who 1 beat Horowhenua 11 — 6. Horowhenua did not see the trophy again until winning it from Bush in 1926, only to lose it again to Bush when it was again contested in 1929. In 1933 Horowhenua won it from Dannevirke and lost'it to Dannevirke the following year. It is thus 15 years since it last crossed the Horowhenua boundary.
The following is a summary of the shield's travels since 1921: — 1922: Won by Rangitikei from Horowhenua, 11 — 6; 1923: Bush from Rangitikei, 14 — 12; " 1926: Horowhenua from Bush, 11 — 9; 1929: Bush from Horowhenua, 6— 3; 1930: Dannevirke from Bush, 14 — 3; 1931: Bush from Dannevirke, 8 — 3; 1932: Dannevirke from Bush, 5—3; 1933: Horowhenua from Dannevirke, 13—6; 1934: Dannevirke from Horowhenua 13 — 11 and in the same year Bush from Dannevirke, 8 — 3. From 1934 Bush retained the shield till 1937. It was apparently not played for in 1938. In 1939 Dannevirke won it from Bush 6 — 3 and retained it until 1941 when Bush was again successful 6-— 3 iThis is the last date which appears lon the shield, but in 1947 Bush | retained it after a drawn game with ■ Horowhenua. Last Saturday it was won by Horowhenua, 6 — 3.
