Early' Morning Assault By Unknown Intruders

HAMILTON, July 14: Two elderly men who had been sharing a room off the back porch in a boarding houss in Hamilton were assaulted by two unknown intruders in the early. hours of this morning and severely beaten , up. Both were admitted to the Waikato Hospital and^one is in a serious condition. They are: — Francis Henry Connor, 69 years, who is in a serious condition, suffering severe head injuries. Geo'rge Walmsley, 75 years, who is-not so'seriously injured. The .assault occurred shortly after 1.15 a.m. and apparently both men were sleeping when their asiailants entered the room. Walmsley is a one-legged man, but both men apparently put up a good defence, as the noise of the assault was heard by o.ther residents in the boarding house and people across the road, who said that the assault was apparently prolonged. ■ When eventually people went to make inquiries, they were too late to s-top the two assailants from running away. . The police, who were early on the, scene making investigations, could give no indication of the reason. for the assault. Their inquiries are proceeding.
