Freighter Sinks Following Explosion
BRISBANE, July 12. The eoa.stal freighter Wandana has rescued from tlie sliores of ' remote Flinders Island, 300 miles north , of Cairns, eight survivors of the 50-ton rnotor-vessel Lochiel, which sank nearby on Saturday. An explosion iii the main hoLd set flre to the Lochiel, whieh was travelling" from Thursday Island to Cairns. Her crew of five and three passengers reached land before she sank in fiv-e fathoms. The Wandana responded to signals and took ibe castaways off in the early morning, nine hours before the news of the wreck reached Brisbane.
