Too Many Hawkers
"A HOUSEWIFE." •
(To the Editor) Sir, — May i through your columns voice my indignation at the multitude of hawkers who are beginning to make Shannon a most unpleasant place for housewives. In prewar days, hawkers were compelled by the council of the day to be licensed, and when licences were issued the hawker had to satisfy the council as to his or her respectability, but 6 nowadays it appears that licences are no longer required and that anyone can sell : from door to door. In the past week there have been hawkers around the borough selling wool, clothing, 1 medicines, floor polish, cake, coal and Women's outfits, and they all appear to think that "no" means "may be" and most housewives flnish up by buying something to get rid of them. I think it is about time that the present council did something about the matter, not only to save the tim,e of the hard-working housewife but to assist in keeping Shannon money in Shannon and thereby keeping Shannon people employed. Yours ete„
