Intoxicated Driver's Licence Cancelled
Charged. with being intoxicated while in charge of a motor vehicle in Oxford Street, Levin, on Saturday night, Arthur James Donnelly, motor driver employed by the Wellington City Milk Department, appeared before Messrs. J. S. Moir and F. H. Hudson, J.P's., in the Police Court, Levin, this morning. Accused, who pleaded guilty, was represente'd by Mr. J. P. Bertram. He was fined £15 ahd his licence was cancelied for 12 months. Sergeant W. Grainger told the court that accused ha*d beeh proceeding south along Oxford Street at 7.25 p.m., when his vehicle collided with a tree just south of the Levin railway station. He ha'd explained that he had pulled over hard to the left to avoid the glare of the hea'dlights of an oncoming car. Constable W. R. Gillespie stated that accused showed obvious signs of being intoxicated, and this ha'd been confirmed after medical examination. Mr. Bertram said that his client had been driving for his employers for 22 years, and was a man of sober habits. He • had returned from New Plymouth and had stopped at Levin, where he had consumed a small quantity of liquor, which had apparently affected him as he was unused to it. If his licence was cancelied it would affect his emplo^ment. There Were no special circumstances which could be taken into consideration, said the Bencli when entering a conviction and flhe and cancelling the licence.
