Meeting Of Otaki School Committee

The - monthly meeting of the Otaki State School Committee was, held last night, Mr. H. Taylor . (chairman) presiding. There were also present: Messrs. N. Taylor, H. B. Ecthouse, W. Wilson, C. Parrant1 and. A, G. Kirkwood .(acting secre- 1 tary). Apologies were received' from Messrs. A. Lumley, W. Calwell and L. G. Gimblett. Mr.- Parrant was welcomed by the chairman, he having been recentiy appointed to the committee. Correspondence "on routine matters was received from the board's j member, and advice was to hand! that the Education Department; had approved of the ereetion of ( three additional rooms and' tend- , efs called for the work. As yet nothing further had been "received j regarding this matter. An invitation was received to ! attend a meeting at the Levin J School on July 12 for the purpose; of discussing consolidating the area's committees into a federation. It was dec'ided that the committee would be fepresented at this meet- { ing. ■ The headmaster's report was received, and it was decided to leave the tuning of the piano in Mr. James' hands. For the next term holidays the school closes on August 20 and resumes on September 6. It was agreed to thank the Rahui Suppliers for their generous donatiori, while a further donation of £1 ls to the Boys' and Girls' Club was acknowledged. Accounts totalling £6 12s were passed for 4payment. The visiting committee appointed for next comprises Messrs. Wilson and Edhouse. ' j Headmaster's. Report The headmaster, Mr. J. E. James,, . reported as follows: "The number on the roll is 406. There have been 19 admissions, and 9 withdrawals. The health of the children appears tq be excellent. The attendances on most days is high, the average being 373. Three inspectors visited the school on Monday, July 5. "The Rahui Suppliers have generously donated £4 towards the school calf rearing competitions. ; The Home and School Association held a very successful social andj card evening in place of its usual monthly meeting. A donation of £2 2s has been received towards the visual aid machine. The buildings •and grounds have been kept in an! excellent order of tidin"ess, but the boundary fences, old sturnps, asphalting, back pathway, pedestrian crossing and accommodation still require attention. S9me xeading material is required for "the upper standard 'classes as addition'-J al reading, and both pianos ne§di tuning. The half yearly surveys are j nearly completed and show a good] j>tan'dard of work has been reached 1 In spite of the broken start made this year."
