Arab guns are traine^ on the New City of Jerusalem and "the Arab Legion . troops are strengthening their positions in ihe Judean.Hills. An Isiael Army order of the day said: "However cruel this fight rnay be, we shall defend the city to the }ast man." Tlie Sy-rians are rushing rein-. forcements and supplies to their border positions. It is reported that an additional 2000 Iraqi troops' have been brought from 'Amman. The Egyptians have brought up modern British equipment and , a considerable quantity of artillery. The United Nations Palestine mediator, Count Bernadotte, today asked the Security Council to appeal to the Arabs and Jews ?to accept an extension of the truce in Palestine. Count Bernadotte's cable saicl: "The parties to the truce must answer the question whether, in the absence of an agreement; they will again resort to arimed jconflict. There is little doubt a decision to resume fighting will be universally condemned and that the parties making such a decision will be assuming a responslbility- which will be viewed by the world with the utmost gravity."
