Claim On "Bookie" By Woman Bettor

Tattersalls Comnnttee, the body which setties betting disputes, has upheltj a claim for £34,250 made by Miss Raehel Evans, of Xorthamptoit. against the bookmaker Laurie Wallis. ATiss Evans, who declares she is a born ganibler and has been betting since the age of eight, told the eommittee that she had sent a letter to Wallis containing a £500-each wav bet on Regret for last season's November Handicap at Manchester. Regret. won at (i() to 1, and Miss Evans claimed her winnings, less £4500 which was lost on other bets in the same week. Wallis claimed that under his betting rules bets by letter were limited to £2. Tattersalls ruled that Wallis musi pay £14,000 this month, £10,000 in August and thc fmal £10,000 in Heptember. Wallis said he is going to ask for a rehearing. "Tattersalls are allpowerfui, " he said. "They eannot make me pay, of course, but they cau stop me betting on tlie'rails." It 4s on the rails, which is the boundary, between the members' enelosure and Tattersalls' ring at racecoursesj that he does his business. .Miss Evans declared: "Money like this onlv conies once in a lifetime, I'lf never again bet more than -£5 each way.
