Horticultural Society Plans Three Shows
The Levin Horticultural Society will 'once more hold three flower shows in the coming $eason. Last year the infantile paralysis epidemic caused the abandonment of the summer show, but the society !is making plans for three successlve shows, the first in November, the second in February and the third in May. The annual meeting of the society was held in tne Cjouncil Chambers on Tuesday evening, ]$r. !®. T.- King presiding over a fair jattendance of members. Apologies were received from 'Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Burdekin and Mr. H. Smith. Mr. Kxiig extended a welcome to an old ! member, Miss H. E. Bowen." He 1 then mvited her to take the chair 'during the reading of the annual reporu and the eiection of ofRcers. • • rn presenting the report of the society's. activities for the past year, Mr. IjUng, expressed regret that circumstances had not permitted it to accomplish all it had jset out to do. It had proposed hoxding three shows during the season, but the Committee had decided to abandon the dahlia show. The chrysanthemum show was held in May and had proved to be a very happy function. Its suc•cess had been largely due to the co-operation of the Women's Institute, who had ' combined with ,the 'society in holding the show. It would have shown a credit had it not been for the high cost of hiring the hall and the extra charge for cartage of furniture and fittings. The society was ■ deeply indebted :to the Levin Borough Council for its continued interest and the lending of the Council Chambers for meetings, continued Mr. King. The Mayor, Mr. B. H. Burdekin, had also shown great courtesy in lending his rooms for committee meetings. For the help of the boys from the Boys' Training Centre the society was deeply indebted. Mr. King extended his hearty thanks to the secretary, Mrs. K. Z. Lynch, for her valued work and co-operation. She had proved a most zeaious and enthusiastic secretary, and .had been a great help" to him through«ut the year. The treasurer, Mrs. Hugh Waiker, had also been a great help and an excellent worker. He extended his thanks to the committee and ail who had supported or helped the society during the past year. He had had a very enjoyable time as president, but he thought that it was time that someone else had the oflice, said Mr. King in conclusion.a ' The whole society very much appreciated Mr. King's work as president, said Miss Bowen, when asking him' to take the oflice for a further year. She paid a tribute to him and to the secretary for their untiring efforts in the interests of the society. ' The election of oflicers for the ehsuing year resulted as follows: — Patron: Mr. J. J. Maher, M.P.; president: Mr. 'E. T. King; vicepresidents: Miss Bowen, Mesdames H. B. Burdekin, W. Hocking, L. J. Hunter and W. S. Lett, and Messrs. H. B. Burdekin, J. Bowker and C. A. Before the election of the secretary, Mrs. Lynch intimated that she would not be available for that position- this year, as she would ,probabiy be leaving on an extended holiday shortly. / This was "something of a body iblow," said Miss Bowen. Members paid tribute to Mrs. Lynch's work 'as secretary throughout the years. 'j A letter was "received from the "secretary of the Dahlia Society of i'New Zealand, Mr. C. R. Hunt, adI vising the society that ia trophy_ for competition among the Manawatu ; Horticultural Societies had been donated by his body, and that it had already been completed for at Fielding and Rongotea. Levin' now .had the opportunity of' having the trophy for competition in 1949. It j was decided to accept this kind 'offer, and that a letter should be forwarded thanking the society for 'its gesture. - ,
