Keen Market Demand For Vegetables

Townsend and Paul, Ltd., fruit and produce merchants, Wellington, report that during the past week the easing off in supplies of fruit has resulted in a slight increase in values, the demand for tree tomatoes being better than for some considerabie time. Choice quality fi*uit is being keenly souglit. Heavy consignments of overseas orangeS have resulted in a definite retarding of saies of grapefruit and Meyer iemons. There is a very keen enquiry for choice - Chinese goosebernes. In the vegetable section all lines are in keen enquiry and ceiling price is being readily obtained. There is a very keen demand for choice sprouts, spinach and celery, while cauliflowers have been coming on to the market more freely lateiy, with values slightly easier. Green peas have reaiised up to ls 3 d per lb. Spring bulbs have been coming to hand more freely, while poppies have dropped a iittle in value. Lighter yardmgs of poultry have been offered and heavy birds are in keen demand. Quotations for last week's saies are as iollows: — Fruit: Tree tomatoes, 9s to 15s; N.Z. grapefruit, 12s to 15s; Meyer iemons, 6s to 9s per half case; small N.Z. oranges, 9s to 11s; Island tomatoes, 25s per case; hothouse tomatoes, 2s 9d to 3s 2d; Chinese gooseberries, 9d to ls per lb. Vegetables: Cabbage, silver beet, parsnips, Ohakune carrots, ceiling pnce, wanted; red pumpkins, 8s to 12s; triumbie, 12s to 16s; cauiiflowers, 14s to 24s sack; celery, 25s to 35s; ieeks, 26s to 32s; rhubarb, 14s to 24s case; artichokes, 8s to 10s per sugar bag; swedes, 8s 6d cwt. (plentiful supply) . Flowers: Poppies, tangerine, 5s 6d to 8s; art, 7s to 12s; sol d'ors, 10s to 15s 6d; jonquils, 7s to 10s; paper whites, 5s 6d to 7s per gross; freesias, ls 9d to 2s 3d per doz.; carnations, 4s to 7s 6d; chrysanthemums, ls to 2s per hunch; vio-; lets, 4s 6d to 12s per doz. bunches. ; Poultry: White leghorn hens, 3s i to 7s; black orpington hens, 6s to 12s; white ducks, 6s 6d to 12s 6d; j coioured ducks, 4s 6d to 10s; cockerels, ls 9d to. 2s per lb.; turkeys, 2s to 2s 3d per lb. live weight.
