The winners in 1946, Miss Brough and Mrs. du Pont, took the women 's doubles title from the 1947 winners, Miss Ilart and Mrs. Todd, in a match which was notabie for Miss Hart's persistent swift service. and mannish voileying against two experienced players, strong in combination. SINGLES TITLE TO FALKENBURG. LONDON, July 2. The American, R. Falkenburg, won the men's singles- championship at Wimbledon today when he defeated the Australian, J. Bromwich, in a five-set match. Bromwich had victory in his grasp in the fifth set, when he was leading 5 — 3 and 40 — 15 on his service. Bromwich had difliculty throughout the match in handling Falkenburg 's canuonball service, but he fonnd the peak of his form at the bcginning of the final set and was then dealing efiiciently with Falkenburg 's service. He lost tliree match points in the ninth game and this obviously upset him. He allowed the American to slash his way to victory in the next four games. Falkenburg in the second set, which Bromwich won 6 — 0, apparentJy decided the cffort to retrieve was pot wortli it. In the final set Falkenburg on numeroUs oeeasions wasted time — sat .down on the court and also wallced behind the baseliue, wiping his brow on his sleeve — and the umpire spolce to him. Bromwich 's pattern of close net-plav in the last set appeared likely to decijp the issue, but the Australian was unable to touch Falkenburg 's slashing services and vollpy^, which the American sent down in k supreme effort in the last three games. There was little between the Americans Brown aud Mulloy, aud the Australian Harper and the Bwede Bergelin in a hard-hitting semi-final in the men 's doubles.
