Trapped In Launch After Explosion
BLENHEIM, June 21. Severe burns were suffered by Desmoncl Hogg,- aged 20, of Blenheim, •while he was attemptmg to suppress a fire which broke out on a launch moored iu Havelock Harbour ou . Saturday night. ■ ■ At the time of the mishap Hogg was preparing the launcli for a fishing trip. He refuelled with what he tliought was Diesel oil contained iu a drum left on the wharf. The fuel, however, turued out to be petrol and in a few mouients the cabin of the launch was iilled with petrol fumes. After completing the operation, Hogg lit a cigarette and there was an immediate explosion. The fuel tank split open and the interior of the launch was enveloped in flames. Hogg was trapped in the eabin. ■ He made a desperate Etttempt to extinguish the fire, but finally, with his faee and hands badly burnt, and with his clothes alight, he leaped through a liatch into the harbour. He was later brought to the Wairau Hospital where he was reported today to be in a fairly serious condition. The fire on the launch was extinguished with the use of a hose, fife extinguisliers and wet sacks, but not before considerabie damage had. beeu done.
