Returned Servicemen Meet
The June meeting of the Shannon Branch of the Returned Services' Association' was hel'd in Laurvig's Hall recently, with the president,.- Mr. B. Clayton, occupying the chair. Those members present wqre Messrs. W. L. Carter, L. P. Schwabe, R. Hook, J. M. Ritchie, R. M. Lange, R. S. Downes, C. Guerin, M. , MeLean, E. Morris, R. Quinlan, /J. A. Reid, H. .D. Aitch'i'son and V. J. Bat°eman, Xacting secretary) . Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. F. O. Burtt and E. J. Gunning, A letter was' received from the secretary of the Fifeshire branch of the British Legion, asking that any further food parcels be serit to the various secretaries of. the legion, thus enabling a better distribution of the parcels to the most deserving cases. On the motion of Mr. R. Hook, this was agreed to. The -roll membership of the branch now stands at 246 members, 197 being from Shannon and 49 from Tokomaru sub-branch. Of this total, 139 Shannon members and 31 Tokomaru members are financial, thus 76 members are unfinancial. The branch has 114 second war members. Messrs. J. D. Gribbon (Nelson) and R. E. McQuade (Palmerston North) were transferred into the local branch. A letter was received from the 'secretary of the Shannon Ratepayers' Association, suggesting that an avenue of trees be planted in Ballance Street commemorating those who gave their lives in the Sec'ond World War. This would also serve to beautify the town. On the motion of Mr. H. D. Aitchison, it was agreed that the R.S.A. support the suggestion in principle and ask that the Ratepayers' Association report further progress. « Mr. Aitchison reported on the meeting held at Wanganui to discuss the remits to the annual conference on June 22, and outlined the remits which were discussed. ■ A vote of thanks was accorded Mr. Aitchison, Mr. B. Clayton reported on a meeting cailed by the War Memorial Hall Committee and also on his visit to Palmerston North with members of the Borough Council to meet the State housing authorities. A vote of thanks was also accorded ' Mr. Clayton for his report. Following a suggestion of the possibility of holding a posers, penalties and profits quiz, tog.ether with a concert, it was de.cide'd that the matter be left in the hands of the entertainment committee.
