Bradman and Harvey adapted themselves quicklv to the conditions but the other bqtsmen found the soft wicket and flying ball too much of a change from the perfect conditions recentlv experienced. Harvey and Hamence vvere Australia's stalwarts after Bradman, appareutly trying to knock a lcft hand spinner from Wardle, mishit the shortish ball into Yardley 's safe liands. Harvey scored beautifull.v and made his 49 in 73 minutes (eight fours). Hamence secured his 48 in# 150 minutes (three fours). Harvey attacked and Hamence defended, scoring principallv from vyristy oft'-drives and shots through the eovers. These three. held the side together, following Barnes' dismissai for a duck with the third ball of the day, and the uneasv batting of the rest of the team.
