Shannon Borough Matters
Matters pertaining to the adminis'tration of the borough were cbsQussed on Tuesday evening at the yjsual fortnightly meeting of the Shannon Borough Qouncil. The Mayor' (Mr. D. A. Fitzger^ld) presided over Crs. B. Clayton, V. J. Bateman, H. L. Norris, R, S. Oownes and L. G. Sayer. Apologies for absence were received from C?rs. C. M. Cronquest, C. G. Wishart and- H, Aitchison. Prior to the commencement of business, the Mayor and council)ors expressed their aeepest regret at the sudden passing of the late postmaster, Mr. C. H. King. 3$r. King was very highly esteemed and observed a high standard of moral integrity, stated the Mayor. A motion with sympathy to his wife and family was carried in silence. Replying to the councii's letter , regarding the condition . of the State highway north of Shannon, the district engineer- of the Public Works Department said the present bad condition of this section of highway, which was principally due to swamp subsidences, was apprecia.ted by the board aiid an endeavour would be made tQ have It brought into better order as soon as possible. A request for a load of metal was granted to a Ballance Street resident, subject to a footpath entrance to his property being fprmed. An invitatiph was recpived from the Manawata Catqhment Board for members of the counpil to be present at a screening of soil conservation films on June 22. The invitation was accepted. Cr, Clayton, chairman . of the domain committee. reported that six yards of metal had been carted to the domain and this was being spread where required. Other work had also been carried out. The chairman of the building committee, Qr. Bateman, reported tRat an application for a building permit by a Stout Street resident Was in order', and upon his motion the application was granted. With regard to the interview Mr. W. S. Gardner had with the council at the last meeting and - Mr. Garner's request that the council supply eieven posts to replace those damaged by fire, on the motion of Cr. Downes this was agreed to in full settlement of any liability. The council agreed that if possible" arrangements be made with the Horowhenua County Council for the hire of a grader for the borough streets. This matter was left in the hands of the, town clerk to arrange. Cr. Sayer stated that he would attend to the repairs required on the Thompson Street bridge and have the drainage in Vance and Vogel Streets intersection ' put in order. Attention is alsq to be given to Bryce Street, stated Cr. Sayer. Subject to it being satisfactory to all councillors, it was agreed that in future the council meetings commence at 7 'p.m., this arrangement being for the winter months only. ; The Mayor reported that while on a holiday visit to Christchurch he had discussed matters of borough interest, for which he was accorded a vote of thanks by the council. On the motion of Cr. Bateman, accounts totalling £66 19s 2d were passed for payment.
