Freak Animal At Saleyards Rouses Interest
Centre of interest at the Levin saleyards this week was an animal offered for sale by Mr. A. J. Mark. It was a well-bred shorthorn, but whether steer, bull or heifer was not apparent, for it appeared to be lacking in the principal characteristies of either 'sex. Interested in the animal is Mr. R. H, Long, veterinary surgeon pf Levin, who is anxious to study its internal organs. This might yet be possibie for the animal, whatever its sex, is destined for the hook, having been sold under the hammer to a Wellington butcher for £14 10s. The purchaser was informed by the auctioneer of the veterinary surgeon's request. The animal was a hermaphrodite, , -said Mr. Long, when asked for Iffs opinion of the freak beast. The flesh, however, would be quite normal and palatabie. The animal was three years old and had been sold to him by his brother, who had bought it originally with a line at a Feilding sale £ix months ago, said Mr. Mark. A Circus proprietor had offered him £50 for it, but the sale had never been fmalised, he added.
