Thief Scatters Money In Hectic Chase

BLENHEIM, June 10. An attempt to steal £170 in notes and cheques from the public office oi the Blenheim Borough Council led to an exciting chase through the streets this afternoon. The thief, who was later ascertained to he an escapee from the Stoke Mental Hospital, was hotly pursued hy a memher of the clerical staif and eventually bailed up. In his sprint along the streets, however, he shed notes and cheques, and when arrested had none of the stolen money in his possession. It was all retrieved, however, and the Council funds remain intact. When the thief entered the office it was unoccupied, but a memher of the staif noticed a man on the wrong side of the glass partition and investigated. The intruder jumped the coimter and tliis was the start of the , hectic chase. The man, who escaped from Stoke on Monday, is to he retumed to the institution.
