Climax To Battle With House Of Commons

Received Thursday, 10.55 a.m. LONDON, June 9. The battle between the House of Lords and the House l Commons reached a climax VaJ>night, when the Lords threw out by 177 to 81 votes the Government Bill designed to curb their powers to delay legislation. The Leader of the Opposition in the House of Lords, the Marquis of Salisbury, just before the vote was taken, rejected a last minute offer by the Leader of the House, Lord Addison, who said he \yas authorised by a special meeting of the Labour Party, held this morning, to say that if the Lords gave the Bill a second reading, the Government would be prepared to consider an amendment about the duration of the veto. The Marquis of Salisbury said: "We are always open to a fair and balanced settlement. If there isn't one the blame rests with the Government."
