You Can't Do That, Says Miss Howard
DARGAVILLE, June 2. "You just cannot bring people into the country like that. We must go into the matter, ' ' the Minister of Health (Miss Howard) told the members of the Kaipara Hospital Board yesterday after she had heard .of the hoard's proposal to advance ' the fares of two Rarotongan girls seeking work as domestic aids and then deduct the cost from their wages. Miss Howard, who is making a tour of Northland hospitals, had just completed an inspection of the • Northern Wairoa Hospital when she f was informed" of the difficulty in • obtaining • domestic staff . The hoard chairman (Mr. Stallworthy) said that, rather than have further delay, ' the hoard memhers might dip their hands into their pockets to put up the fares. It was then the Minister made the remarx. Stating that the hoard was unahle to act in such a manner and that authority was necessary, Miss Howard promised that an investigation on hringing domestics from Rarotonga would he made. Two Rarotongan girls had previously heen trained in the maternity'annexe and had proved satisfactory, added Mr. Stallworthy. m r> a n» n n n - ~ - n n 1*1 ~ — ^fii*if>Al*ll*ll*l
