Famous Muralist Raises A Storm

The famous muralist,- Uiego Rivera. agaiu has shocked his countrynien by painting " Dios no existe" (God doesn 't exist) in a panel for the j dining room of a sumptuous^new hotel, Archbishop .Lnis Martijiez told ■ fl.eyspajiers today he would not bless the hotel until tlie words were erased. It is customary in Mexieo citv to have the Church bless all new build- j ings, ottices and businesses. The hotel manager, Lnis Osio, said he discovered the words recently and asked the artist to reniove thein but Rivera refused. ''Ile said it' would violate his principles and he threatened to take legal action if 1 had the words erased," Osio said. Tlie mural is called "Sunday. i\rorning in the I'ark" and sliows a document held by a Mexican philosopher, Ignacio Eainirez, which states: "Ignacio Eamirez aflirmed and demonstrated logically and experimentally that God doesn 't exist." Rivera has frequently aroused bitter controversy with radical expressions of his art.
