May Meeting Of Shannon Women's Institute
The vice-president, Mrs. M. Parr, presided at the May meeting Of the Shannon Women's Institute and welcomed. all members. It was 'decfded that the tins of fruit left over from the Anzac dinner should be sold to members. The competition for baby's socks, donated by Mrs. J. . Grifliths, was won by Baby Barnett. A vote oi thanks was passed to Mrs. j/ Andrews who judged all the competitions. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames A. E. Burling, Ashley, August and J. T. Bovis.
On behalf o'f the War Memorial Hall Committee, Mr. j. R. Herbert spoke and aske'd for the- support of the institute as an organisation in raising funds for the building of a memorial hall. Mesdames W. Easton and M. Parr were appointea delegates to attend a meeeting in connection with this project. The Mayoress (Mrs. D. Fitzgerald) displayed" a goodly number of garments, many new, which were hande'd in at the v meeting "for her: appeal last meeting on behalf of the Save the Children Campaigri. * A feport on the reeent " anhual meeting df the Manawatu' Federa^ tion was fead' by ' Mrs- E. The 22nd birthday of the institute was celebrated by the holding of a party in the Parish Hall recently. There was a large crowd present, inclu'ding visitors from the Levin and Ihakara Institutes. Music for dancing was -played by Mrs. J. Barnett, Junr., pianoforte solos given by Miss Joan Swindlehurst and Miss v. Munford and elocutionary items by Miss Mary King and Master Trevor Miers. Competition dances were won by Miss C. Stern, Mr. D. Turner, Miss C. Burke and Miss B. Gardener. The 22 candles on the birthday cake were lit by the presi-dent of the women's section of the R.S.A. (Mrs. C. Guerin) and the president of the Wdmen's Division of Federated Farmers (Mrs. K. Mitchell) and Mrs. J. A. Easton, while they were blown out by the president of the Levin Institute (Mrs. Kellaway) , assisted by Ihakara Institute members. The cake was cut by the youngest member of the Shannon Institute, Miss -Joan Radford. All these people presented Mrs. W. Easton (president of the W.I.) with flowers, at the same time expressing good wishes to her institute. Opportunity was taken to present the silver cup for the most points gained in the coihpetitions over months to the winner, Mrs. W. Easton. A trophy was presente'd- to iMiss Joan Radford for having the most entries over the same period. The festivities concluded at midnight.
