Starving Children Appeal Goes Well
" ? WELLINGTON, June 1. Gifts totallmg £140,000 have been reported to Dominion headquarters of Uniled Nations Appeal for Children, /said , the chairman , of the appeal " execiitive, Mr . C. S. Palconer, tonight. Last Triday the tot?.l was £100,000. The executive was very satisfied with the ! result so far, said Mr. ■ Balcpner, who emphasised. that the , hgufe given did not take into account many distric'ts whose Mayors v/ere holding back funds till they had a liigh 'total to report. Though they had not yet reported, rural districts were known to have responded to the appeal particularly well. - The intention of the Government to introduce legislation during the coming session of Parliament to validate contrihutions made by local authorities to the funds of the United Nations Appeal for Children, was announced tonight by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr. Parry. He said the tenn ''local authorities" would be given tlie widest possible meaning and would include all bodies classed as local authorities within the meaning of the Local Government Loans Board Act, 1926.
