WELLINGTON, June 1. "I have told the head of the Labour Department in Dunedin to call a compulsory conference of the parties "With hixnself as chairman, ' ' said the Minister of Labour, Mr. McLagan, when asked tonight if the Government was intervening in the Dunedin tramways dispute. The Minister added that if either of the parties failed or refused to attend, he would immediately appoint a tribunal nnder the Strike and Lockout jtimergency Reguiations to settfe tnis dispute which, in the inteyests of everyone concerned, including the public oi .Dtmedin, should be settled at the earliest possible moment.
