Horowhenua Waltzing Title Decided

The Horowhenua waltzing championship was decided in the Regent Ballroom on Saturday night and drew a -large number of contestants. The winners were Mr. J. Carr, of Palmerston North, and Mrs. C. Bidgood, of Levin, while Mr. and Mrs. H. Mungavin and Mr. J. Millard and Miss Millard filled secon'd and third placss respectiveiy. Before judgihg the contest, Miss Irene Oliver told the competitors the conditions of the championship and gave then hints on which they wouid be penalised. The event created great interest among the large crowd present and the winners were warmly. applauded. Before asking the Mayqress, Mrs. H. B. Burdekin> ? s to piresent the cups, which had been "donated by Murphy Motors and De Luxe Tea Rooms, Mr. W. R. Jack, president of the Horowhenua Marching Association, extended thanks to Mrs. Burdekin and Miss Oliver. Mrs. Burdekin, in making the presentation, congratulated the winners and expr.essed her pleasure at being present at such an enjoyable function. Bouquets were presented to Mrs. Burdekin an'd Miss Oiiver, on behalf of the association, by Miss Janet Benfell, leader of the Alpine Marching team. Making a welcome break in the dances was the ballroom demonstrations arranged by Miss Irene Oliver. The first was a demon"stration of the modern waltz by Miss Miles and Mr. R. Harrod, and their graceful movements and intricate steps brought forth much comment and applause. As an encore they demonstrated just how a quickstep shouM be done. Later in the evening Miss Irene Oliver and Mr. J. Rodgers gave an exhibition of the tango, this also drawing the admiration of the audience, as the various movements of this spectacular dance were performed to perfecfion, " With almost non-stop piaying by-'" the orchestra and six prizes bemg awarded apart from the cups, th0 popular M.C., Mr. Oollier, kept things moving at a merry pace and midnight came all too soon. The ladies' committee of the association, as usual, had the catering arrangements in hand and served a delicious supper. The next dance will be held in the Regent Ballroom on June - 19 with new attractions.
