Post Office Holiday With the exception of the telephone exchange, which will be open continuously, the Levin Post Office will be closed in all its branches on Monday next (King's Birthday) . Vital Statistics Births recorded for May by the registrar, Mr. H. J. Henderson, number 13 as against 19 for the same period last year. Deaths number ed seven as against three in May of 1947. There were six marriages in May compare'd with five during the same month last, year. Oniy one ceremony was performed by the registrar in May tms year. Body Identifled The body found on the beach at Cape Kidnappers last Friday has been identifled as that of Mr: Alan Alexander Cuthbertson, aged 70, married, of Hastings. He was wellknown to Hastings., people as . the elderly art union ticket seller who sat behind a small taple in Heretaunga Street. ; Mr. Cuthbertson had not been seen for about a-week, and it is thoughtithat his body had been in the water for that time. Members of his famiiy are believ- ! ed to reside in Taranaki and in the South Tsland.
Rush to Pay Tax. With yesterday the last day to pay social security charges on income other than salary without incurring the 10 per cent. penalty, the Levin Post Office was crowded with people making a last-minute effort to avoid the penaity. The acting postmaster, Mr. J. Patterson, said today that- there were qusues all day in the savings bank branch and the staff was kept very busy. Delays were inevitable because so many deferred making payment until the final day.
Supplies for Pitcairn An unexpected call had to be made at Pitcairn Island by the Rimutaka, which arrived at Wellington yesterday from England. While passing, through thei Panama Canal, the ship met the England-bound Rangitata which had been chartered do land supplies at Pitcairn. This nad been imposSible because ot tremendous seas at the time. The Rimutaka took the supplies aboard and successfully discharged them to the Pitcairn Islanders. The ship brought 296 passengers to New Zealand. Sewinsf Machines Stolen Thieves broke into the Palmerston North intermediate School late on Sunday night or early yesterday morning ■ and made off with two electric sewing machines. The door to the principal's office was forced open and four or five shillings stolen from one of the drawers. Members of the staff were working at the school on Sunday night so it is thought that the intruders must have paid a visit , after they had left. It is fortunate that the large sum of money raised by the school for the appeal for nhilrirfvn was not on the nremises.
