Inquest Without Body
Reference was made by the Attorn ey - Generai (Mr. Mason) to the- Auckland Press Association message stating that, although 12 months have elapsed since the disappearance of Richard Stanley Bagby, racehorse trainer, of Ellerslie, no authority has been given by him for the holding of an inquest. The Minister said that the law formerly was that an inquest was to inquire into the cause ■ of the death of a person whose body haa been recovered. Cases arose where the fact of death was acknowledged, but the body could not oe recovered, and the law was recently amended to enable the AttorneyGeneral to authorlse an inquesr into the cause of death in such cases. Applications to. hold such inquests normally came througn the pdlice, who made inquiries, and where • no body was found great care was taken to ensure .that the fact .ofi death was completely established.
