Power Board Helps Appeal For Children At its meeting" this week, the Horbwhenua Electric Power Board decided to donate £50 to the United Nations appeal for the re'xief of the children of the world. The donation will be forwarded direct to the appeal headquarters. The decision was taken after much discussion "and on ( receipt oi/ a ctrcular from the appea'i headquarters, setting out the objects of the campaign and seeking the board s support. - . Commenting, the chairman, Mr. T G Vincent, said that the appeal [ was backed by the grearesr author- • ity in the world today, but in movI ing that no action be taken, • he said he personally considered that the campaign was absoiuteiy an :individual matter. 'He was "not too happy about 'that," said Major-General R. Young. The United Nations was trying to do something for world peace. "Are we going to stand by it or not?" he asked. The rnoney was to be used for one purpose Only and that was to feed these children. "It is not for me to say whether it is 'right or wrong, but I think they ought to be given a chance."
After further discussion it was decided that 'a grant of £50 be made. _ . The Waikanae Beach sive Association wrote seeking the establishment of an agency there. It was decided that in view of the difficulties in fihding a suitable agent and an office, 'an officer of the board visit the area on two occasions during the discount period to co'ilect payments. It _was also decided that this be done meanwhile at Paekakariki.
A letter was received from A hrm» of solicitors requesting, on behalf of residents, a power exiension ro Hokio Beach. It was pomted our that the residents. there were living under primitive conditions in regard to lighting. It was stated by the board that the iine would cost in- the vicinity of £2640. After discussion it was decided that a fresh survey be made and, it a sufficient • guarantee could be obtained, that the instailarion proceed when men and materials were availalole. The' power board's estimates for the year allow for a total income of £106,760 and expenditure of £106,330, leaving an estimated surplus of £430. These figures were, of course, based on the iimited power quota of five per cenf.. Year's Engineering Work During the year equipment was instal'le'd for controlling, over the telephone lines from the Levin depot, the water heaters in Shannon, Levin, Otaki and Paraparaumu township , and beach, reported the engineer, Mr. J. F. Bryce, in his annual statemenr. Temporary metering equipment had also been installed which enabied the load supplied from both polnts of supply to- be measured at Levin. Arrangements were made with the Post and Telegraph Department for the hire of circuits between .Mangahao and Shannon substation and between Shannon suostation and Levin to enable tnis metering and control to be carried out. These circuits also provided a direct telephone communication between these points* ! "During the year 487 new service 'lines have been run, 15L services altered and 97 temporary services connected and tremoved," continued the report. Further, 671 poles were erected and 234 poles removed, making a total of 17,932 In service. Of the 234 removed, 88 were taken out on account of decay, 66 being hardwood and 22 locally grown. Seventy-one miles of wire was erected and 29 miles removed. Waterheating control wires were run at Paraparaumu Beach, Raumati North, Paekakariki and Waikanae Beach. "On March 31 last there were 8000 consumers connected to the supply, of which 514 were connected during the year and 59 disconnected. Included are 835 milking sheds (increase for year nine), 2888 ranges (350), 3366 waterheaters (307), 1876 industrial motors (136), 19,120 heating points (1,740), 61,314 lighting points (2603). During the year 1487 meters were installed and 409 removed, leaving a total of 16,029 in service." In conclusion the engineer thanked the board for _ its cooperation and help during the year. The board members, in reply, thanked the engineer for his services in the past year and asked him to convey the board's thanks to his staff.
