WELLINGTON, May 17. Twelvc hundred sheep, less ubout 30 casualties, whicli were shipped from the Chatham Islands aboard the Port WaiI kato, were landed at Petone wharf this morning after the Port Waikato had beon taken there from the>str^am by a lug. The sheep, whicli were badly bruised by the rolling of the disabled sliip, were in a pitiable coudition and highly nervous state, but nll buti two reached the wharf gates ' without trouble. They were then taken quietly along tho waterfront and allowed to graze as they went to the stockyards where they were hold until railed tonight to the Feilding salcyards. The exact numbcr of sheep lost 011 tho trip will not be known until the flock is counted, but it is believed that fewer than 30 died. Elcven died from crushing or broken necks or suffoeation duriiig Wednesday's gale or on Tliursday. Wix died oti Friday and tliree 011 yaturday. The earcases were thrown ovcrboard. Two horses, oue carried on the deCk and the otlier below, arrived in good condition.
