Liquor Near Dance Hall
Being in control of liquor in the vicinity of a dance hall was , the charge preferred against tWo youths, William Te Hiwi, of Foi'irua and Leonard William Barnett of Levihi Who Wefe chargM yesterday in the Magistrate's Court, beforeMr, H, J. Thompson, S.M. Sergeant W. Graingei', in placing the facts before the cJOurt, said" that the defendaiits were two of a party of four, two of Which had alfeady been deait With that lliofnifig lii the Cliiiaren's Court. Ohe of them had two botties of beer, which as he had approached; had been piaced Ih the back of ihe .car; He ha'd Spokeh to the group aiid each had admitted being part owni ers of the beer. ASked if he had any thing to say, Te Hiwi replied I that the beer was sot his. He had met ohe of the others charged at a 'dance and this person had asked him if he waiited a drink and they had gOne out to the car. j "Neverthcless We Will haye td take it that you had part Control of the beer, said Mr. Thomson, when entering a convictiOn. He was fined £3, but on Sergeant Grainger pointing out that -defendant had come to Levin by train and that he pfobi ably lost a day's pay by his appearjance in court, Mr. Thomson reduced the fine to £2. Court costs Wdfe 10s. 'The other defendant, i Barnett, who did not appear lh | court, was cOnvicted and fined £3, court costs being 10s.
