Britain Producing All The Isotopes She Needs
- — Received Wednesdav, 7 p.m. LONDON, May 12. With the eomplelion of a seeond atoinie pile at tlie Barwell atomie research station, Berkshiro, Britain wili new be able to produce all the radioaetive isotopes needed for research. Phis will niean a considerable dollai snving as previously it was neeessary to inpiort isotopeR -from America. Isotopes, whieh are artilicjally ereated radiouctive atoms, are used in both biological and medical research, chiefly in the treatment of caucer and allied diseases, and in increasing the knowledge of !ife processes. An initiat sup])ly of isotypes was needed before ihe new pile cogld be operated and this was obtained from the original Harweil pile erected under the suoervision of the New Zeaiand scientist, Mr. WatsonMupro, when he was on the staff Qf the' Barwell station. Bo fav isotopes of abouf 30 dift'erent types have been produced at Harweil in varying quantities. An important part of (he woi'k at Harweil is the deaigping of special Qf packing' in whieh the isotopes can saf'elv be transported. Great care is neeessary in designing these packageg in order to prevent the sel&ase of raflioaetivo material.
