Is North Island Safe To Live In?
ROTORUA, May 11. _ Will Rotorua disappear iu a terriiic eruption? Will the geysers and hot springs dry up with the consequent loss of tourist trade? Is volcanic activity from Ruapehu shifting towards the south and is the North Island really safe to live in? It would take 100 years before any degree of eertaintv could be (.'ontained in the answers, saiil the Director of the Geologieal Survey Department, Mr. Ongley, in opening the annual conference of .the survey in Rotorua today. The, present theiue of geological know ledge was "don't kqow, ' ' he said. Over 30 delogates have gathered from all porlions of New Zealand to listen to papers and diseuss papers in a langnage incomprehensible to the lavinen. An- important point, stated Mr. Ongley, was the manner in wliich the real woric of the survey, its long term researcTi, was being hindered bv immediate requests for help and iaformation
upon it by other departments and outside organisations. "We should be working 10 years into the future . so that when politicians and planneTs need data, it will be there, " he said; - UBut I know of many cases wliero offic'ers have to divert their attdntion into imruediate problems whieh are important but wliich are not the Teal object oi the department."
