She Cares For The "Lost" Children Of Sydney
A professional minder of lost children is the unusual job of an elderly, kindly Australian woman.
She is Mrs. Harriet Emblen, of jsydney, who' shelters about -100 lost children every year. Her cdreer as a "minder" began about four years ago. There was no special home for lost children, so the authorities had to find someone with a good reputation who would care for the children until they were claimed. Tney found a willing "foster-mother" in Mrs. Emblen. She is often awakened between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m. — always to the same scene. A policem&n cuddling a lost ancl frightened child. Mrs. E-mblen's first job is_ to quieten and console the child, wash it, feed it and put it to bed. Sometimes she shelters as many as six children in'one week. The youngest chiid she has been called upon to care for was only iour months old. .
