Reporting to the Shannon Borough Council at their fortnightly meeting on Tuesday evening, C. .H. L. Norris, chairman of the library committee, said- that his committee haye carried out . ah inspectron of the public library; and after a careful survey they had decided to put the library on a sound footing and to do justice to the subscribers, with the exceptlon ot about 25 per cent. of the present books, the remainder could be . written off as useless. . Cr. Norris stated that the com- ; mittee was astounded at the1- dil- 1 apidated condition of the majority of the books and the general allround condition of the library. The committee was of the opinion that , the remainder of the council would be of the same opinion. To put the \ library back.to at least a reason- i able state would require the purchase of approximately four hun- ; dred books, at an estimated cost of ] £150. These books would' then be in 1 the library for all time until re- t pacements could be purchased from time to time. Cr. Norris said that his committee suggested that provision be made in the estimates for j a library grant of £135 to cover pur- i chase of books and other library ' expenditure. Cr. Norris went on to' ] state that in addition to the books 1 to be purchased there would be the i freq lssue of interchangeable books 1 from the National Library Service. It was pointed out by Cr. Norris that there was a balance of £21 in the library account at present so .J the approximate amount required [ would be dbout £110. t It was suggested that £40 be i spent on fiction books and £35 on 1 non -fiction. The amount paid for ( fiction books would pay for itself £ and therefore would not be a re- 1 curring liability each year, stated , %0r™> a?d 1'ecommended the c establishment of the National $ Library. service and cannot see any ! of Pr.oviding an up-to- l date library service for the com- ? scherne 6XCept by adoPting this \ Following a discussion it was 1 tpr6fhP Lold the matter over un- J ui tne estimates were considered. f
