Big Increase in Licensed Motor Vehicles

WELLINGTON, May 7.__^ Tliere was a record number of 359,157 motor vehicles licensed in New Zealand on March 31, eclipsing by 15,215 the previous higliest iigufe in December last of 344,211. Announcing this Hon. P. Ilackett said that in the three months-January to March, 1943, the Post Oftice Kogistry issued 15,21(5 additional motor vehicte llcences, and that in the year since March, 1947, tliere had been an increase of 29,882 motoi> veliicle regis'trations. Of the 15,000 registrations in these three months (5423 were cars, 6949 were comnierc'ial vehicles and 1844 were motor cyeles. The New Zealand totals in these classes are now: 216,459 cars, 124,012 commercial vehicles and 18,995 motor eycles. fhe total number of motor vehicles in New Zealand has been steadily increasing in recent .years, said the Minister. Tliere are today over 100,000 more motor vehicles licensed than 11 years ago. The number at March 31, 1947,. was 254,017.
