Otaki W.I.'s Birthday
The 17th birthday of thq Oi.aKi Women's Institute was celebrated recently with a concert and dance in the Anglican Hall, Otaki. A very large attendance filled the hall to capacity, and a most enjoyable time was spent. • The president,- Mrs. Ross, welcomed the guests. These ■ included Mrs. Powell, president of the Southern Wellington Federation, members of sister institutes and the president of the Otaki -Plunket Society. Mrs. Ross wished everyone a happy and enjoyable evening, and then called on Mrs. Powell, who was presented with a shoulder spray. Sprays were also presented to Mesdames W. T'aylor (past president) and Ross (presiripnt) , Miss Brown (secretary for fche past year) , and " Mesdames Robertson (tea hostess.) and Bartholomew. The concert organised by Mrs. Moss, leader of the Drama Circle, was then preserited. The items were: Songs, the Singing Circle; recitation, a musical monologue, Miss P. Fogden; pianoforte solos, Master Richard Housiaux; vocal solos, Mr. W. ,.il- .Townrow, Mr. J. E. Jam.es - and Awery;- -••vopai sketch, Mr. Lumley; comedy play, the Drama Circle; vocal trio, Messrs. James, Townrow -and Lumley. At the close .of the items Mrs. Powell presented Mrs. Ross with a bouquet of flowers and, in a short ' speech, wished the Otaki Institute many happy rpturns. She complimented it orujts enthusiasm and ; endeavour. ! Bouquets and birthday greetings , .weve then presented by the repre1 .sentatives of sister institutes. A ' delicious supper was served and the candles on the birthday cake lit by ' ; members of visiting institutes 1 They were then extinquished by l.Mrs. Powell. Mrs. W. Taylor, the 1 . past president, cut the cake whicb "iwas handed round. i The supper arrangements were Liin the capable hands of Mrs. Rob•jertson and her helpers, and the ■ -birthday cake was made by Mrs • Robertson. The decorating was the ';work of Mrs. Kirk. Mrs. Bartholo•!mew ably played all the musical • accompaniments. After supper the ;,floor Was cleared and dancing was jhcarried on till a late hour.
