Maoris Must Observe Law As The Pakeha Does
WELLINGTON, May 3. Outspoken comment that Maoris were bound to observe the law to the same extent as the pakeha was given in the Supreme Court today oy Mr. Justice Cornish in dismissing the appeal of Claude Nepia, a Maori labourer, against his sentence of 14 days' impriscxnment, on a charge of obstructipg the police, imposed by Mr. A- M. Goulding, S.M. ■•The Maori is entitled to no privileges that ■ are denied the pakeha. He "is bound ■ by the law in the same way as the pakeha is. The law will not tolerate pakehas dbstructing the police. Police duties are frequently dangerOus and this •court— every court— will always protect the police carrying out their duties fairly. The uniform of His Majesty's police must oe respected. The court will not tolerate any obstruction of the police in doing their duty."
