* Mrs. W. Easton presided over a good attendance of .members atthe April meeting of the «hannon Women's Institute, and in her opening remarks stated Ibhat since the last meeting Mr. L. The names of those whom the local institute wished to vote for were handed to Mrs. Thorne. \ . • After diSQussion, it was decfded to support two remits. The first was from the Ashhurst Institute ' and was to the effect that the attention of the Minister of Supply be drawn to the apparent abundance of sugar, bct^es and kegs available for the manufacture of beer and the tragic shortage of sugar, jars and vinegar for home fruit preserving purposes, and that the organisation suggests to the Minister that he give the matter of supplies of sugar, vinegar, jars, etc., to the housewife for home preserving, his most favourable and urgent co'nsideration. . The secon'd was from the Manawatu Federation and was as follows: "That this federation views with concern the distasteful forms of advertising used by some firms, ana asKs that steps be taken to rectify this praetice." M.isses V. Munford and Joan and Ruth Swin'dlehurst were proposed as new members. Six books on subjects in connection with England were hande-d out for reading. These wc;~ a portion of a gift of 30 books recently received by the Manawatu Group from links in England, having been sent by them as a mark of gratitude for food parcels received.
