AUCKLAND, April 29. ■ - At the trial at Hamilton of Fay Koberta Phillips, oh a charge' ' of administering belladonna or an allied poison to " the sub-matron at the Taumarunui Hospital with intent to in- • jure and annoy, Dectective Sergeant W. H.- Cromwell, of Taumarunui,'' was about'to. give eyidence when Mr. Turner ob-. jected to its admissibility on the grounds that statements made by accused tp -vtritness had not been voluntarjly given, but had been made as the result of an improper inducement by a,: poiice officer. His Honour said he could not give a .ruling pn counsel's objection until he had heard the evidenee. He directedthe jury to tetire while the evidenee was being heard. He said that if he ruled that the evidenee was admissibio, it would be repeated to «the jury. Deteetive Sergeant Cromwell ?gave his evidenee and was f ollowed by Deteetive ■Sergeant Long, of Palmerston North, who was present when accused was ; being interviewed by -Cromwell, l His Honour ruled that parts of t'he , evidenee given by the deteetives were . not admissible and he said he would dis- . euss with eounsel1 tomorrow what evi1 dence would be admitted.
