Basketball Association Elects Officers
The annual meeting of the Horowhenua Basketball Association was held in the College Hall this week, with Miss H. M. Chapman-Cohen presiding. The association's competitions thorughout the ye'ar were most succesSful, said Miss Chapman-C.ohen in her annual report. The competition games had commenced with 27 teams, 12 of which competed in the A grade, seven in the B grade and eight in the C grade. College Old Girls A were the winners of the A grade competition, with College. A runners-up. In the B gradb Aces were the winners and College D the runners-up, while in the C grade Primary A were the winners an'd College H the run-ners-up. The knock-out tournament at the end of the season had been won by College A in the A grade and College C in tlie B grade. Several representative games had been played during the season, eontinued Miss Chapman-Cohen. A fair amount of success had been gained in these games. In conclusion, she extende'd her best wishes to_the clubs for a suecessful season and thanked all who had helped her in any way during the*' year. The association's grateful thanks were due to the referees, club captains, the girls themselves and all who had lent their support. Also to Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Burdekin for the presentation of a silver cup, to the Horowhenua College for the use of its courts and to the patron, Mrs. M, McDonald. The election of officers was then held and resulted as follows: — Patron: Mr. N. A. Byrne; president: Miss H. M. Chapman-Cohen; vicepresidents ; Messrs. H, F. McClune, Butt, Hager, and Mesdames M. McDonald and Wishart; secretary: Miss P. Hills; treasurer; Mrs, F. D, Chainey; committee: Mrs. Granger and Misses J. Winiata, M, Batten, V. Aim and M. Karauti. Aetivities for the eoming year were discussed-and several important decisions were made. Referees wer.e called for and advised of an examination to be held in June. The grading of teams was left to • the management committee anu three new teams notified their intention of joining the association. _ After discussion, it was unanimously deeided to increase tne affiliation fees to clubs. The position of teams on a wet or doubtful day was raised, it being mentioned that it was~"often very difficult for clubs to make a decision. It was deeided that in this case it would be arranged for the secretary to communicate with 2ZA Palmerston North and have an .announcement made at noon. The meeting clored with a vote of thanks to the chair and members took the opportunity of thanking Miss Chapman-Cohen for hef work as seleetor and coach of the representative teams, and her help to the individual members of each club. Replying, Miss Chapman- • Cchen said that it was the enthus•iasm of the girls themselves, many of whom cyeled or travelled by bus a great aistance .each Saturday, which made the season such a success,
