In less than three vears about ; 3,000,000 tons had heen added to mer- I ehant shipping in Fnited Kingdom ownership and to-day the Ited Ensign flew over one-quarter of the world's nierehant tonnagp, said Mr. Barnes, Minister of Transport in London. He added i that the pre-war proportion was about one-third and that Britain 's aim was , to restore her merehant fleet to at least • its pre-war strength.
