Burdekin, commenting that this. would enable ; cases to be taken up without f delay.. -. 4c 4c 4c • The gas committee recohimen'ded that the gasworks maha'ger Mr. A. C. Kennerley) be authorised to lay adequate sized mains, at thte first opportunity', as . follows: Eleven chains to replace the existing oue inch pipe ih Manchester Streeet; six chains of 4-inch' fibrolite pipe at Qileenwood Road to complete the circuit between Queen and Bath Btreets. This- was approved. 4c -K -K FiVe dw;ellings had been completed' during the month of March, while 56 dwellings were at present in vari-ous" stag'es of construction , ih the borough, reported the build- . tng inspector, Mr. H. T. Tilyard. In addition nine State houses, one a double unit, were also in the course of erection. 4c 4c 4c Receipt of a suggestion from the HoroWhenua CriCket Association for consider ation to the re-laying of the wicket on the Weraroa Reserve was reported by the works committee. The overseer (Mr. E. Lycette) had .estimateed the cost at £50 and the committee recomhiended that the council carry out the work, provided that the association was .prepared to pay half the cost over a period of tWo years, the work to proceed immediately "if consent was obtained. 4c • 4c 4c The HoroWhenua Rugby Union wrote intimating that this season it would be increasing the percentage of gate takings payable to local bodies for the use of aomains from 10 to 20 per cent. The offer was accepted, and the council decided to write to the union thanking it for its generosity. The Mayor remarked that the council in turn would put the extra back into the Levin Park Domain by way of improvements, there being a great dsal which required doing. It was further decided that the ' fees to other local bodies using the ground femain as at present. .4c 4c , 4c Permission to use the Regent Hall ( for play on Tuesday and Thursday nights each week was Sought' hy the Levin Badminton Club. The Levin Indoor Basketball Association applied for the use of the hall on one night weekly and the Levin Boxing Club on Monday nights. The badminton club was granted Tuesday nights, the boxing club Monday nights and the basketball association Thursday nights at a •rent'al of 10s per wefk, subject to the council not requiring it .for another purpose. * 4C -K. A letter was read from the Levin Ratepayers' Association suggesting that the water race on the south side of Trafalgar S'treet be deepened to reduce the amount of water collecting in the area. Cr. D. J. Gardiner reported that if the race was deepened it would not have the necessary fall and would be dangerous. It was decided to advise the association accordingly. * 4c 4c A request fgr information as to what action was being taken in the matter of the .erection of a planing mill in the borough, without a permit first being issued was made by the Levin Ratepayers' Association. The Mayor stated that the Building Controller had been asked to take action, and it was resolved to reply accordingly. 4c 4c 4c Residents in the vicinity of the disused metal pit in Bath Street requested that consideration be given to the planting Of trees around its perimeter. This was agreed to if those interested wefe prepared to contributc half the cost. 4c x 4c 4c A recluctioh in the rehtal of the Regept Hall for a series of dances it proposed holding was sought by' the ent'ertainment committee of the Lsvin bran'ch of the R.-S.A. The council expres'sed regret that it could not grant a .reduction. 4C 4c 4C Approval for the trahsfer of a section at the corner of Queen and George Streets from Mrs. L. S. Webb to Mr. A. J. Gray, and also to Mr. Gray's proposal to ferect a com.bined grocery, dairy and eonfectionery shop on the section, was asked for in a letter from Messrs. Park and Bertram, solicitors. The council agreed to both r.equests. . 4c 4c 4c Kilfings at the abattoir were continuing very bUoyantly, reported the manager, Mr. E. L'arsen. The stock . slaughter.ed during March was as follows, the figures for the same month of -last year being given In parentheses : Cattle 724 629), calyes 214 (175), sheep and laffibS 5721 (4216) and pigs 863 (704) . The fees for the month totalled £1332 13s 5d.-; as compared with £1144 3s 9d in MarCh 1947. 4c 4c 4c During the mohth of March 6970 books were issued by the Levin Public Library, advised the librarian, Mrs. M. Whitaker. They comprised fiction 5874, non-fictlon 312 and juniors 327. Seventy-four new books had been added. Commenting, the chairman of the library Committee said that quite a number of books .were being returned in a damaged condition, ahd he appealed for the exercise of greater C'are as books Were very expensive to p,urchase.
