Young Seaman Drowned At Blenheim
BLENHEIM, April 18. A young man lost his life in the Opawa River about three miles from Blenheim, on Saturday afternoon: He was Mr. William D. Grombie, aged 24, single, a seaman employed . on the coastal vessel Wairau. With three eompauious he went down to the riverbank to shoot xabbits and about- 4 p.m. decided to have a swim. He reaehed the opposite bank less ,than 50 yards away . and after a short rest. eommenced to return. About a third of the way across he was seen to struggle and sink, A companion, Mr. Michael Waters, tried to reseue him but could find no trace of Crombie.' The poliee were called and dra,gging operations eommenced but late Sunday evening - were §till unsuccessful. Deceased.'s mothei ; is Mrs. E. Orombie, Pukerua Roadj . Plimmerton.
