President Truman Appeals For Curb on Inflation

' Unless Congress aeted inimediately to eurb inflation, fhe nation would faee the ever increasing- danger of depression, said President Truman in an address today to the American Sorietv of XeAvspaper •Editors' annual eonvention. The President added: "Inflation is getting steadily worse and is undermining the United States' eeonomy. A strong Arneriean eeonomy is the bedroek whereOn i-est liopes for establishing world peaee. Without it we eaunot provide either ' aid, leadership or example. ' ' Pointing out that despite February's break in graiu priees, the general priee level still eojitinued to soar, President Truman appealed again for the enactment of the ten-point anti-inflation progranime which he proposed to Congress in November. This progranime ineludes standby eontrols over* priees and wages, a standby rationing system, eurbs 011 eredit and other measures to hold down priees and eonserve scaree goods. President Truman said: "We are striving to avoid an eeouomic (jrisis by proteeting our prosperitv while we have it. We are striving to avoid a war erisis by being firm before it is too late. The effectiveness of our foreign policy and the strength of our defeuees all depend 011 this prosperitv."
