Cumings, of Karori, is at present the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Beattie. The Rev. Cumings will conduct the evening serviee at the Presbyterian Churcn on Sunday. First Frost A light frost was experienced in Otaki on Thursday morning. Trampers In Tararuas A number of trampers arrived in Otaki by Friday night's train and are at present engaged in scaling uhe Tararuas. Violets Find Readv Sale ' Early violets . from Otaki are finding a ready market in saies at Wellington, and are bringing goo'd^ prices. Food Parcels Apnreciated A letter, acknowledging a food parcel from England, speaks in high appreciation of, the great kindness of the people of New Zealand. It says that if one could see the shops one would think London a place of plenty, but the 'difflculty lay in . the f act that all f oodstuff s j are rationed. "No one starves here," i continues the letter, "but so many j articles of foodstuffs have been cut j out, and you • have no variety— ! only a monoto'nous dlet, that does not satisfy old or young. The only restrictions af our hotels an'd i restaurants are the prices of meals. There is nothi'ng to stop those with the money having as many meals as they like. The Labour Government system . hits pensioners and those with j practically pre-war incomes. Din- , ner at a nearby restaurant means i that we have to spend ls for meat j and vegetables, 4d for a cup of teaJ 2d for soup and 2d for bread and j cheese. These places are run by "municipalities and are non-proflfct making." -
