"The damage is done by the grub of a moth, ' ' said Mr. J. S. A. Millar, of the Fields Division of tlie Department of Agriculture. ''The moth is very small, of about the same size as Ihe clothes moth. It lays its eggs on exposed tuberg and grubs develop in the tubers. The dry and vi arm season this year has been favourable to all kinds of pests. the potato moth among them, ' ' said Mr. Millar. "In a normal season its deprcdations would be less noticeable. The remedy %vas for the grower to see that all tubers were pro'perly covered in earthing-up operations of potatoes. " . A consignment i'rom Rangitikei which arrived at the "Wellington markets today was affeeted in almost every tuber. Soine Avere half rotten, the affeeted portion beiug a black or brown slimy mass.
