WINTER HITS OTAGO.
DUNKDIN, April 7. Snow, sleet, hail, rain and wiml lashed Otago last night and this morning as winter made its first onslaught after tlie exce.ptionaUy long spell of line drv weather. Thc strongest gust since records h*ave Jieen kept at Taieri, swept ttcross the eountryside at 9.10 p.m. when a velocity of 75 m.p.h. was reaeh ed. During the height of tlie storm the wind averaged 50 m.p.h. and frecjuently blew at 60 m.p.h. The hills around Dunedin were topped with white this morning aiul hailstones up to half an inch in diameter spattered over tlie city twice this morning. Karlier to -day fluiries of snow and sieet swept acrons the province. The daniage caused by the storm was surprisingly liglit. Only broken tree limhs, fallen electricaJ and telegraph wires and fiattened fences were the afterxuath of tlie buffeting. The hills throiigliout Central Otago were also white with snow to-day. At Ranfurly there was 2 inches of snow lying on the ground. Tlie roads, however, were all clear throughout the province at noon, although slipperv with snow in places.
