Ban On Beach Motor Sports Discussed
There was a certain amount of speed in the systems of some people which they just had to get out and if they did not do so on beaches in a properly organised way, then some might do so on the highways without the same safety precau- . tions. This was stated by Dr. S. J. Thompson at the council of the Automobile Association (Wellington) on Monday night when he moved that the council support the sports bodies concernsd in their opposition to the arbitrary closing of beaches by the Minister of Marine for motor-cycle and car racing. Dr. Thompson said. that these persons got no special licences and were entitled to use their petrol coupons as they wished in the same way as other motorists and motorcyclists. These events did not drive people from the beaches. He hadi seen 8000 persons attracted to Waikanae to watch such events. Dr. G. Robertson supported Dr. Thompson. '/ It was decided that the chairm'an, Mr. E. A. Batt, approach the Minister and ascertain the reason for the ban which operates as from May 1. | ' Mr. A.
