Work Of Heritage During Past Year
WELLINGTON, April 6. The total number of children on Heritage register was 2289, s'aid Dr. O. C. Mazengarb, K.C., chairman of the executive council, at the annual conference to.day. The actpal amount spent in direct assistance in 1947 to these children whose, fathers lost their lives in World War II was £5954, as against £2727 in the previous year. "This expenditure does not reflect the full mbnetary worth of the service rendered," said Dr. Mazengarb, "because advantage is freely taken of the assistance available from the State in matters of health and education; and also because school authorities, professional men and tradespeople have made substantial reductions in their usual charges (and have often declined to accept any payment at all) when they have become aware of the interest of Heritage in the r^atter. "The number of .children in respect of whom expenditure has been incftrred for health and education is as follows: — Medical, dental and optical treatment, 150/ training in the cultural arts, 46; children at boarding school and similar instit'u tions, 53. The^e figures do not inelude those children for whom suitable free treatment or training has been arranged."
